Temporary installation in Sydney’s Angel Place – 2009. Artist Michael Thomas Hill created “Forgotten Songs”, an installation of 110 empty birdcages suspended above the ground that also contained an audio element that gave the sound of 50 or so birds that used to exist in the area prior to industrialization. The audio would change from the sounds of daytime birds to nocturnal birds as the sun wen’t down.
I’ll love anything to do with making people stop and think about what we’re doing to the planet as a species. It really saddens me when I think that so many birds have been forced away from their homes. I’ve read that there are 129 species of bird native to New South Wales formally listed as extinct or threatened with extinction. This is the sort of thing we should all be reading about.
